Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
