Fierce Gales Leave Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand
Severe gales reaching speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties without power and compelled agencies to cancel more than 100 flights, according to domestic outlets.
The gales are affecting the complete southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.
Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones including these major districts.
Residents have been encouraged to avoid going outside, avoid travel, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.
Extensive Destruction and Emergency Measures
The electricity loss appears to be affecting homes mostly in the South Island, though authorities report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.
Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.
Within the capital, a person was lost his life after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.
Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.
Air travel in and out of the metropolis have been cancelled as a result of the gusts, whereas certain highways and community centers are shut down.
Meanwhile local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.
Strike Action During Extreme Conditions
The powerful gales on this day occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been called a "significant labor action", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.
However the severe conditions has compelled them to change various scheduled activities, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or abandoned.
