Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, demons, and dark forces growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of characters who will branch out from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group understands precisely where to go next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his own means, entering the secret base, striking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute the target and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as important members in the powerful family could help the group reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which players will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
